Thin Kerf Ripping

Site saw ripping conditions

Thin kerf ripping suits portable saws where motor power is limited and stock is mostly pine, shutter ply or soft board. The 24T thin pattern clears chips well on straight rip work, which helps when extension leads, shared supply and small motors all take a bite out of available power. On Highveld jobs, dust around the arbor can throw a light blade off line sooner than operators expect.

Use this blade for long grain cuts where speed matters more than a furniture-grade edge. A 2.0 mm kerf removes less material, so the saw labours less than it would with a heavier plate, but feed pressure must stay even. Check whether your machine takes 20 mm or 30 mm bore before packing for site.

Before the first length goes through, confirm fence parallel, riving knife alignment and that the blade runs true at full speed. Then test on offcut from the same pack, especially if the timber has hard knots or wet patches. If the cut starts wandering, back off immediately rather than muscling the stock through.

Best use on common stock

This blade is most at home in SA pine, shutter board and similar construction timber where a fast rip is needed from a lighter saw. It is not the pick for thick hardwood or sheet goods needing a clean top face. For other stock types, compare the matching paths under Materials.

Match the blade to the cut before chasing more power from the saw. Read the note under Kerfs if you are balancing speed, waste and motor strain on a portable machine. If you use our contact form, include timber species, thickness, saw model and whether burning starts near the front or rear teeth.

SA site conditions that matter

Portable ripping on South African jobs often means variable supply, dusty trestles and timber that sat outside before cutting. Inland dust packs onto flanges and under collars, while coastal moisture can leave pitch and surface rust if blades are put away dirty. Those conditions matter more on a thin kerf plate because it has less margin for abuse.

After load-shedding or generator switchover, let the saw come fully up to speed before feeding stock again. Cape humidity can tighten timber overnight, and Gauteng heat can dry one edge faster than the other, which changes how a board closes behind the blade. If the machine starts pinching cuts, inspect fence set, blade sharpness and the riving knife before blaming the timber. For spares or mounting parts, note that through Workshop Spares Kit.

Numbers to check at the saw

Teeth / grind24T thin
Kerf2.0 mm
Bore20/30 mm
NotesDo not force on thick hardwood.

The key figures here are 24T thin, 2.0 mm kerf and 20/30 mm bore, which are the numbers most often checked during fitment. Keep them against the machine card so the right blade goes back on the right saw after transport between jobs. If you need to send machine details, use the contact form.
