Workshop Spares Kit care

Keep the Workshop Spares Kit dry, labelled, and easy to inspect. Wipe down arbor washers, reducers, and lock nuts after dusty shifts, then separate oily parts from clean packing pieces. Replace damaged small parts before they mark a bore or throw alignment off on the next blade change.

Care cadence for Workshop Spares Kit

This kit works best when each part goes back to its marked place after a changeover. Resin, MDF dust, and fine steel swarf collect quickly on spacers and flange faces, so a nylon brush and clean rag should stay with the kit. Do not toss loose reducers and shims into one tin where edges get burred and sizes get mixed.

Each week, empty the case and check that the spanner, reducers, flange washers, and cleaning pieces are still there. Once a month, inspect for mushroomed lock nuts, worn hex flats, and any spacer that no longer sits flat on a bench. After load-shedding stoppages, let hot metal parts cool before packing them away, especially if they were pulled from a saw straight after a long rip run.

Replace worn kit parts

Take a part out of service if the reducer is ovalled, the flange face is scored, or the locking hardware no longer tightens evenly. Slight rust can be cleaned off, but pitting on contact faces usually leads to poor seating and blade wobble. Consumables such as cleaning pads and marking cards should be topped up before the kit goes back to the saw area.

See Holders for caddies, sleeves, and racks that stop the small hardware from knocking together in the drawer.

Case packing for site moves

Pack heavier steel pieces at the bottom of the case and keep thin shims, reducer rings, and cards in separate sleeves. For travel between jobs in Gauteng, KZN, or the Cape, add a light oil wipe to bare metal if the kit may sit in a bakkie overnight near the coast. Nothing sharp or threaded should be left loose inside the box where vibration can nick edges and damage labels.
