Care
HSS slitter upkeep is mostly about edge protection, rust control, and keeping the bore true. These cutters often work close-tolerance widths, so a light film of approved oil after cleaning matters as much as the next grind. Mark blades for regrind once feed pressure rises or burrs start appearing on strip edges.
Start with the sides, bore, and keyway area, because fine swarf packs there long before it is obvious. Paraffin or a suitable cleaner will lift cutting residue, but the blade must be dried fully before it goes back into a sleeve or rack. Store each HSS Slitter flat in its own separator or upright on a protected peg so the thin plate does not pick up nicks.
For daily care, wipe off coolant splash, moisture, and any blackened residue from cutting mild steel, brass, or aluminium sections. Each week, check the bore for fretting marks and inspect both faces for scoring from dirty spacers or arbor collars. After load-shedding stops a machine mid-cut, let the slitter cool naturally and inspect for heat tinting before running the next batch.
Send an HSS Slitter for sharpening when the cut starts throwing a burr, the machine needs extra feed force, or edge finish worsens across the full width. Replace the blade if cracks show near the bore, if the plate has lost flatness, or if repeated grinds have taken it below the usable diameter for the arbor setup. On gang slitting work, keep matched blades together so the stack returns with consistent widths.
Use the contact form with the blade diameter, thickness, bore size, material being slit, and the condition of both faces. That helps us point you toward care checks, spacer issues, or the right items in Holders for storage and handling. Include any burn marks or burr patterns if the problem shows up only on one side of the cut.
Keep HSS slitters away from bare concrete dust, coastal air, and open coolant mist, especially in Durban and other humid areas where flash rust starts quickly. Use waxed paper, plastic sleeves, or oiled separators between blades, and never leave thin slitters loose in a shared drawer with spacers and keys. For site transfers, pack them upright in labelled sleeves so thicknesses do not get mixed on the next setup.
