Guide
Set the stack width, check the nut bite, and test on scrap first.
Build the Dado Stack Set on a clean arbor, starting with the two outside cutters and only then adding chippers to reach the groove width you need. Paper shims matter here because a fraction of a millimetre shows up fast in cabinet backs, shelf housings, and drawer bottoms. Before any production board goes near the fence, raise the set clear, rotate it by hand, and make a trial pass in offcut timber.
Arbor length decides whether a stacked cutter can be fitted safely, so measure the thread engagement instead of guessing from memory. The bore must seat flat on a 30 mm arbor with no wobble from worn reducers or packed dust behind the flange. On saws used across day and night shifts in Gauteng shops, recheck alignment after blade changes because vibration and transport can shift settings.
Cut one sample groove and mark it with the date, stack build, and measured width. Keep that test piece near the machine or file a clear photo where the next operator can see the bottom finish and shoulder quality. When a batch of birch ply or melamine starts showing fit problems, that first sample gives the crew a known reference.
Different board products react very differently under a dado cut. Supawood packs dust into the groove and benefits from steady feed, while veneered ply shows tear-out first on the exit edge if the backing support is poor. With melamine-faced board, use a sacrificial fence and backer because chipped shoulders stand out immediately on fitted joinery.
Use the matching material path when you switch from solid timber to board products, and read the kerf note before changing shims or cutter order. If your saw has limited arbor length, low motor power, or guard restrictions, send the machine details through our contact form.
Stop and reset the stack if the groove width varies across the board, if the bottom comes out heavily ridged, or if burn marks start on dense hardwood. A dado set that works in pine may struggle once you move to gum, oak, or laminated panels with glue lines. It is usually cheaper to rebuild the stack and check the fence than to force through a full cutting list.
Teams buying for shopfitting work around Clearwater, Cresta, Pavilion, Tyger Valley, Baywest, Mimosa, and Riverside should pass on the actual groove size, board type, and saw model when setup advice moves between branches. That avoids a second round of guesswork when one branch tested on pine offcuts and another is cutting melamine shelving.
