Heat on PVC edgeband

Flush trim too hot melts the band edge.

By Ms Masego Ngwenya, Material path writer

PVC edge heat marks

On white and light grey edging the damage shows fast as gloss, drag, or a blackened corner after flush trim. In Gauteng dust or Durban humidity, a small setup drift can turn a clean edge into a melted smear by the second panel.

Author Ms Masego Ngwenya keeps the voice practical. No tapestry metaphors. No robust seamless filler. Just the check that saves a board when Highveld dust or coastal humidity shows up mid-shift.

Use the note at the machine, not later in the office. Check the first trimmed edge with your thumb and under side light, then compare the top and bottom corners. If the band feels tacky or curls a burr, heat is building somewhere in the cut.

Trimmer settings and stock match

Read the linked blade path and material path before changing cutters, feed, or edging thickness. Heat on PVC edgeband usually comes from a blunt trim cutter, too much pressure, poor chip clearance, or feed that pauses on the corner. If you send a query through our contact form, name the edging thickness, board finish, and whether the mark sits on the top trimmer, bottom trimmer, or both.

Workshop conditions that matter

PVC edging reacts differently between dry Highveld mornings and sticky coastal afternoons. Fine dust around the trimming station holds heat and can stop the cutter from clearing cleanly, especially on wrapped melamine parts. After load-shedding stops and restarts, recheck the trim rather than assuming the earlier setting stayed true.

If your stock behaves differently, note the board brand, edging size, and glue type against the panel sample. We update these notes from marked parts and repeat faults, not from sales sheets. Browse related checks under Kerfs when the defect shifts from melting to chipping or whitening.

What to check during shift

Start of shift, trim one test piece and look for shine on the band edge, not just chip-out. Around tea break, feel the offcut and the cutter area for unusual heat after a run of narrow parts. Before handover, write down any feed reduction, pressure adjustment, or cutter change so the next operator does not repeat a bad setting.

Coastal shops often need closer checks on adhesive squeeze and swarf build-up after lunch. Inland shops usually catch trouble when dry dust packs near the trimmer hood and the edge starts polishing instead of cutting. On thick 2 mm PVC, corner heat shows earlier than on thin tape, so inspect radiused work carefully.

When you use our contact form, include the city, panel type, edging thickness, and the machine station that overheated the edge. A photo of the top and bottom corners helps separate trim friction from glue contamination. That makes the note, cutter path, and machine check easier to line up.

Not every burned edge needs a new cutter set. Resin, glue smear, packed dust, or a trimmer set too tight can raise temperature enough to mark PVC. When the stock changes from matte white to woodgrain or from 0.4 mm to 2 mm edging, reopen the checks instead of carrying over the last setting.
