Mixed saws, mixed bores. Labels beat guesswork.
By Ms Mmathabo Mabuza, Care & flanges

A reducer that fits a 30 mm arbor can still cause trouble when it gets dropped into the tin with 25.4 mm and 20 mm rings. On a shared saw bench, the wrong ring often gets blamed on blade wobble or a bad sharpening when the issue is simply misidentification.
Author Ms Mmathabo Mabuza keeps the voice practical. No tapestry metaphors. No robust seamless filler. Just the check that saves a board when Highveld dust or coastal humidity shows up mid-shift.
Write the bore size on every reducer, not only on the packet that disappears after the first week. Use a paint marker, stamped tag, or marked divider in the drawer so the next operator can check size without measuring twice. Dust, resin and oily hands hide small engravings very quickly.
Check the machine arbor first, then open the related blade path and material path before fitting a reducer. A thin-kerf blade with the correct bore ring behaves differently from a blade that is merely forced to fit. If you need to flag an odd combination through our contact form, name the saw model, blade bore and reducer size so the check starts with facts.
In Johannesburg and Pretoria shops, fine dust settles into the reducer tray and makes stamped sizes hard to read by mid-shift. Durban humidity can leave light surface rust on plain steel rings if they sit in an open drawer near a roller door. Markings need to stay legible under both conditions, especially where several saws share one blade cabinet.
If your ring set includes odd bores from older spindle moulders or imported saws, keep them separate from common 30 mm stock and record that on the card. Browse the rest of Kerfs when a sizing problem keeps appearing with the same machine and blade family.
The panel saw stops for a blade swap and three reducers come out of one plastic tub. Instead of trial fitting, the operator reads the marked sizes, picks the correct ring for the arbor, and checks that it seats flat against the blade body. That small habit prevents side play that only shows up once melamine starts chipping.
Coastal shops should wipe reducers dry before they go back into storage. Highveld sites usually need a dust blow-off and a quick look for burrs after each change. When cutting chipboard or MDF, resin and fibre build-up around the bore can make a good ring seem oversize until it is cleaned.
When you send a query through our contact form, include the city, machine arbor size, blade bore and the reducer marking you read on the ring. That gives a clear starting point if the problem is movement on the arbor, poor seating, or simply mixed storage in the drawer.
Not every vibration issue comes from the blade plate. A worn reducer, a nicked flange, or a ring with no size mark can create the same bad cut pattern on plywood and laminated board. Once the stock changes, repeat the fit check rather than assuming the previous setup still applies.
When a reducer keeps shifting between 20 mm, 25.4 mm and 30 mm arbors in the same saw room, send the details through our contact form. Add the machine model and the reducer sizes on hand so the note stays tied to the correct blade setup for Kya Sands, Johannesburg.
