Guide
Set the scorer width, height, and lateral line before the first panel.
Scoring Pair setup starts with the scoring blades, not the main blade. Fit the pair so the score line is just wider than the main kerf, then raise the scorer only enough to cut the face layer cleanly. On cold Johannesburg starts, run a few test passes in offcuts to check that the line stays centred once the spindle is up to speed.
Confirm the bore, spacers, and rotation marks before tightening anything down. A scoring unit that sits off-centre by a fraction will leave one shoulder rubbing and the other shoulder open. Check the riving knife against the main blade afterwards, because scorer adjustments can hide a line problem until the full cut goes through.
Keep one sample strip from the first correct setup and mark it with blade code, spacer stack, and board type. That reference helps the next operator match the score width without guessing from memory. If settings changed during the shift, note what moved and why before the machine is handed over.
Use the scoring pair mainly where the bottom face chips before the main blade exits. Double-sided melamine, high-gloss board, and veneered panel usually need a very shallow score and steady feed. With laminated stock from busy cabinet shops, a tiny height change can be the difference between a clean edge and breakout along the face paper.
Use the matching material path and the related kerf note alongside this setup page. If your scoring unit uses an unusual arbor, spacer set, or motor arrangement, send the details through our contact form so the setup can be checked against the machine layout.
Stop and reset when one side of the groove shows chipping, when the main blade leaves witness marks beyond the score, or when the panel underside starts fuzzing on exit. Those signs usually point to incorrect scorer width, lateral misalignment, or too much scoring depth. It is better to correct the pair on the saw than push a full cutting list through damaged board.
Shops supplying joinery into Clearwater, Cresta, Pavilion, Tyger Valley, Baywest, Mimosa, and Riverside often keep notes for the panel brands used on those runs. Record the board finish, blade code, and spacer combination so the next setup at the machine starts from known settings rather than trial and error.
Our contact form is the place to send scoring spindle diameter, arbor length, panel material, and the cut fault you are seeing. Include whether the issue shows on the top face, bottom face, or both, especially for workshop setups around Kya Sands, Johannesburg.
